West
Haven was originally part of the land purchased by the New Haven Colony from the
Indians. Its first settler established a homestead ten years after the New Haven
Colony was settled. Then it was known as West Farms. A parish was formed in
1715. In
1779, during the Revolutionary War, the British landed at Savin Rock, on the
shore. The name came from the characteristic red cedar or savin found in the
area. In the late 1800s and through the mid 1900s Savin Rock was site for a
large amusement park that was often called the "Coney Island" of
Connecticut. Today the amusement park is gone and where it stood there is a
variety of uses including a lovely waterfront promenade. West Haven is blessed
with three mile of shore front and beaches.
